History of Meru Forest Plantation.
Meru / USA forest plantation is part of the Meru forest Reserve, which was
gazetted in 1920. The reservation was done in order to preserve the Natural
forest area and conserve the soils, Biodiversity and Maintain constant water
supply
for Arusha town and neighboring regions.
Early 1950 the natural forest on the middle slopes
of Mount Meru, between 1500 and 2500m a.s.l ,were replaced by man made forests,
mostly of cupressus lusitanica, pinus patula, Grevillea robusta in the matrix
with olea capensis and Eucalyptus spp.
During the establishment of the Plantations, "taungya" System was
adopted. The forest
division planted trees and squatters continued
to raise their crops for 3 years after planting.
The introduction of mechanized forestry in
1980's gradually made the forest less attractive.
It was then that it became possible to ser aside special recreation areas as
nature reserves,
we now have Oltoroto and Sambasha and Nadingoro where most of land is
protected for recreation purposes, walking safaris, picture
